Short Course GCSE:   Edexcel.

Marks: The Short Course GCSE is in two parts: the coursework collection of a Database and a Website; and a written examination.
  • Paper 1. Two coursework projects: 60% of the overall marks.
  • Paper 2. Examination length 1 hour: 40% of the overall marks,
    • Part 1: Multiple choice answer questions;
    • Part 2: Structured questions based on the pre-released case study.

The coursework consists of a word processed report of what work the student has done.

The documentation should have:

  • a cover page, with the candidate's name and number, and the type of problem solved;
  • detailled evidence of the research, activities and processes undertaken to solve the problem;
  • hard copy evidence, annotated notes and screen printouts fully explained.

The task is broken down into 5 sections and marks up to a maximum are shown below:

  • Identify:            5
  • Analyse:           9
  • Design:             9
  • Implement:      12
  • Evaluate:          5
  • TOTAL:         40
  • Extra for quality of written communication over both projects:      4.

Each piece of coursework should be small but cover the areas identified to be a worthwhile piece of work. It is important that the students attempt to complete each section as a means to solving the problem to give them experience of an organised approach.

The Examination:

Section A:

The learning outcomes are presented as powerpoint slides. Multiple choice questions will be based on these.

Section B:

The case study is the framework for a series of structured questions. During the examination students will be given questions that require them to complete a selection of design tasks relating to the stated problem. Students may be asked questions that relate to aspects of the implementation and testing of a solution in the stated problem.
