Stirling Props Scenario

(Pre-Release exercise from 2003)

Stirling Props is a TV and film prop hire and sales company. The owner of the company is Jean Stirling. It is based in Elstree, Hertfordshire.
The company hires or sells items for TV and movie projects, theme pubs, adventure parks, etc.

The stock includes: classic and luxury cars, old phones, novelty giant items and everyday props from the past, present and even the future.
TV and film companies sometimes need unusual items for their projects. These are made by special order.
Twice a year the company auctions its most famous props from well known movies and TV shows. This is a secondary source of income.

Finance Department
Parmjit Singh is the manager of the Finance Department.
He sends out hire agreements and invoices to customers. He sends them by post.
The Department deals with other day-to-day finances of the company such as:
-collecting financial information from each department
-paying employee salaries
-paying suppliers
-producing company accounts

Marketing Department
Allan Lewis is the manager of the Marketing Department.
He promotes the company, brings in new business and collects customer data.
He organises and advertises the auctions twice a year at a local film studio. It has a paper-based list of prop and costume collectors. He tells the collectors when an auction is going to take place.
He advertises in:
-theatre and film magazines
-business directories
-national and international newspapers

Purchasing Department
Andrea Jones is the manager of the Purchasing Department.
She works with several different suppliers and is responsible for ordering:
-stationery and other office supplies
-raw materials for the design team to create new props
-stock for current and future projects

Research and Development Department
Sam Stirling is the manager of the Research and Development Department.
She looks for information about objects the company could buy for future projects. She also gathers information for the design team.
The design team creates replica objects and unusual items.
Sometimes designers travel all over the world to ensure the objects they design are authentic and in keeping with the project. This helps them to give the customers exactly what they want.

Task 1

Information Brief

The design team is creating props for an Egyptian film. Produce a one page brief for them.
In order to do this effectively you must plan the steps that you will take to get the information.
You MUST use at least one paper-based encyclopaedia and one CD-ROM encyclopaedia.

(a) For one of these, produce a list of the steps you will take to find the information for the fact sheet.

(b) Using the information researched, produce a one page word-processed fact sheet.

Your fact sheet must contain information about:
-Cleopatra
-hieroglyphics
-pyramids
-Nile
It must contain at least one appropriate image.

(c) State which source you found the most useful and explain why.

Keep detailed notes of all the information sources (see Task 4).

Task 2

Travel information

Two members of the design team have to go to Ottawa, Canada for a meeting with a film director and his art department.
The team must travel from Elstree Studios, Hertfordshire to Ottawa. The film director will be invoiced for the total bill.

(a) Create a one page word-processed itinerary for a return journey for the two members of the team. For each stage of the journey, you MUST show the:
-departure point
-method of travel
-duration time
-arrival time
You MUST also show the total cost of the complete journey.

(b) Produce a screen shot showing the search criteria for one of the searches you make.

Task 3

Research Information

Sam wants to make sure that all staff in the Research Department know how to locate a specific book in the library using the Dewey Decimal System.
Research the Dewey Decimal System and produce a notice for staff which lists the major categories and explains how an individual book is classified.
Keep detailed notes of all the information sources (see Task 4).


Task 4

Bibliography

Make a list of all the information sources that you have used to complete the tasks.
You MUST give enough detail so that other people can use your sources of information.

Backups

Keeping backups of your work is essential to avoid data loss.
Provide evidence of your saved tasks 1-3 and their backup copies, using one or two screen shots.
